Child Participation Specialist

ROLE PURPOSE:

The Child Participation Specialist plays a key role in developing capacity building materials and conducting coaching and training of partners on safe and ethical child participation, on participatory approaches and on skills to support children and youth to plan and lead campaign activities.  This role is also responsible for developing strong relationships with partners and networks, to ensure quality and timely project reports, and for capturing learning and results of the project.   The Child Participation Specialist will also ensure that experience and learning from this project is used to strengthen child participation within Save the Children Sri Lanka and with other partners.

The position includes regular travel to partner locations in the north.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, this role will be expected to work outside the normal profile of the role and be able to vary working hours and location accordingly.

 

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: 

Technical support and capacity strengthening

  • Collaborate with partners to contextualize and refine training materials, ensuring materials and methodologies are participatory and age group appropriate
  • Conduct training and provide ongoing coaching for partners on child and youth participation and child and youth led campaigns and other relevant topics
  • Provide support to a network of CSOs on child and youth-led campaigns and identify and support other CSOs and CBOs to support child and youth led campaigns
  • Provide hands on support to partners as they work with children and youth to safely design, plan, implement and monitor campaigns on safety in public places
  • Design, and deliver a learning event for children and youth from different locations to share best practices and experiences
  • Ensure learning from the project informs other campaigns and programs 
  • Ensure all project activities are strictly compliant with SCI’s policies and standards on safe and ethical child and youth participation, and support with ensuring this is integrated across SCI Sri Lanka work

Project support

  • Review and provide feedback on partner reports
  • Contribute to high quality, timely narrative reports on the project, in line with SCI and donor requirements
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Campaigns Coordinator to ensure the effective design and delivery on key project activities
  • Ensure project activities comply with all of SCI’s policies and standards

REALM

  • Collaborate with Research Evidence Learning and Accountability (REALM) team on the establishment and implementation of the project MEAL plan
  • Collaborate with Research Evidence Learning and Accountability (REALM) team on the establishment and implementation of effective accountability and feedback mechanisms for the project
  • Ensure that key learnings on child and youth participation and child and youth led campaigns are captured, and strategies are used to ensure learning is used, amongst staff and partners

General

  • Contribute to team meetings and planning processes, internal initiatives and reporting requirements
  • Demonstrate leadership in relation to Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child safeguarding, bullying and harassment, code of conduct, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelors’ degree in community development or a related subject with equivalent field experience

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • 5-7 years’ experience in one of the following:  designing campaigns; supporting safe and ethical child participation
  • Successful experience in working collaboratively with CSOs and networks
  • Understanding of how protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA), safeguarding and safe programming should be integrated with child participation. 
  • Excellent training and facilitation skills, with experience with child friendly approaches an advantage
  • Experience of planning project activities and report writing. 
  • A high level of written and spoken English, including an ability to write clear and well-argued reports.
  • Ability to work both in an advisory and a hands-on implementation capacity
  • Good understanding of practical application of gender inclusion principles
  • Proficiency in Tamil is preferred, while fluency in both Tamil and Sinhala will be considered an advantage.
